What are the main features of a Hotel Insurance Policy?

Hotel insurance is a specialist form of business insurance, designed to cater for the specific risks you might face in your industry. These may include events such as kitchen fires, electrical issues, arson, vandalism, slips and accidents, and burst pipes. As a basis, hotel insurance policies often start with public liability and employers’ liability insurance, contents and stock cover. You then have a wide range of options, explored below, to tailor your package as you see fit.

Main Features

  • Public liability insurance to cover claims made against you by members of the public in and around your hotel. This includes assistance with legal defence fees and settlement costs where the claimant is successful.
  • Employers’ liability insurance for loss or injury at work. Regardless of whether your staff are permanent or contracted, this insurance is legally required in the UK and failure to hold a valid policy could result in hefty fines and/or expenses should a member of staff make a claim against you.
  • Products liability insurance should be included for anything you sell and/or distribute, for example, packaged refreshment tray items. Many businesses are unaware that they can be held just as liable as the manufacturer for any issues arising from their use.
  • Contents insurance is vital to cover expensive items such as kitchen equipment, PA systems, POS systems, furniture and linen against damage, loss or theft.
  • Stock cover is also something to consider, as it is likely you may have food and drink items on your premises. This can be uplifted during seasonal periods such as Christmas or Easter where you may have a higher volume of items than usual. Deterioration of stock is also an optional cover – should your fridge or freezer malfunction and food is wasted, you can be recompensed up to your policy limit.
  • Buildings insurance to cover criminal or accidental damage to your own premises, for example in the event of flood, fire or storm damage.
  • Personal belongings cover for guests and employees.
  • Cash on premises cover in case of theft (e.g. tills, safe, on-site ATMs)
  • Loss of liquor licence cover if you experience a temporary loss of income due to circumstances beyond your control.
  • Business interruption insurance to cover lost turnover if an insured event means you cannot continue to trade.
  • Cyber cover to cover investigative work, restoration of data and data breach dispute fees and settlements.
  • Directors and Officers insurance will help payout for defence costs and compensation where a claim is brought against individual board members, managers and employees.
  • Hospitality inspection cover for unexpected damage during regulatory machinery checks (e.g. guest lifts).
